| Here you can see more detail of the gun controls (Note the thumb trigger on the handle, the cocking lever on the left side, right at the window edge), as well as the ammo feed belt coming from the wooden ammo box. Just above the gun you can see the oxygen regulator for the starboard gunner. Despite what you may see in war movies, the B-17 only carried enough ammo for each gunner to shoot for a total of 1 minute. When coming in to land, with low fuel and a damaged aircraft, the guns and their ammunition were the first thing to be tossed overboard to lighten the load. |
